The word of God / His Holy Scripture
The word of God is how God makes Himself known and how He speaks to His people. The Bible is the
word of God and all scripture is God breathed (2 Tim 3:16). God has revealed Himself through His word
and through Christ. John begins his gospel clarifying that Jesus is an eternal part of the triune God. "In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God." (Jn 1:1,2). John goes on to explain this more clearly by adding Jesus is the word
of God become flesh (Jn 1:14). According to Rev 19:13 His name is the word of God, and His word of
truth is how God brought us new life (James 1:18). His word of truth being Christ Jesus and His
redeeming salvation. He brought forth new life to mankind through the work of the cross. The gospel is
Gods saving word and through the gospel Gods plan for reconciliation and His purpose are revealed.
Jesus even told us of the importance of Gods eternal scripture by saying "Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (Matt 4:4).
What we should know about Gods word
- Gods word is absolute, never failing and perfect (Ps 19:7). God's word is infallible and
trustworthy in guiding and building our faith.
- Gods word is creation and all things were created by the word of God. (Gen 1, Jn 1:3).
- Gods word is eternal and will never pass away. (Matt 24:35, 1Pet 1:25).
- Jesus is Gods word become flesh
- Gods word is alive and pierces the spirit and soul. (Heb 4:12)
- Gods word gives direction in all areas of life, revealing His truth and transforming our lives and
behavior as a result. (Jn 17:17). God's word is our guide to life; it teaches, guides, builds faith
and gives wisdom to the simple.
God's word promotes spiritual growth
God's word is nourishment for the spirit and soul and without a dedicated study of the Bible
spiritual growth is NOT possible (1Co 3:1-4). Spiritual survival and growth depend on a consistent
receiving of Gods word daily. God made that clear through Israel's receiving of the daily manna in Dt 8:
3. The truth of Gods word is required to experience spiritual transformation "through the word of God"
(1Pet 1:22-25). God becomes personally known through the reading and understanding of His word
and it is through the Holy Spirit that our mind receives understanding (1 Co 2:10). The Holy Spirit
guides our reading of scripture revealing its deep and sometimes hidden meaning while giving
understanding to our mind. The wisdom of God is foolishness to man unless the Holy Spirit reveals
Gods wisdom to man. The Holy Spirit is also the author of the scriptures. Every word was given by
divine revelation and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. To truly know God you must know His word. A
continual commitment to hearing and studying the Bible is necessary to grow in Christ. An increasing
knowledge of the scriptures is the key and the path to a more intimate relationship with the Father. His
word is how we come to know Him well and his word increases our faith. (Ro 10:17).
It is imperative that the believer's walk of faith be strongly rooted in Gods word. Many proclaiming
Christians have delusions of their spiritual standing. I have found that people who encounter a spiritual
experience characterized by yelling, screaming, jerking and even speaking in tongues usually have very
little knowledge of Gods word. The encounter experienced is usually a false manifestation, an unclean
spirit or the works of the flesh allowing no self control. This happens when interests are primarily
focused on specific manifestations or spiritual presence and not directly on God. When one does this
they leave themselves open and may invite spiritual encounters of demonic forces masquerading as
angels of light. Adding to the problem of confusion, many of today's preachers take only a few lines of
scripture combined with motivational rhetoric to feed the itching ears of today's society. Everyone
wants to hear how God can bless them and that everything is going to be OK. Today's church is in dire
need to stop focusing entirely on spiritual manifestations and get back into TEACHING Gods word.
God's word gives wisdom, knowledge & instruction
God's word also transforms the life of the believer by giving wisdom and knowledge. God's word
has the power to transform, renew and regenerate those who seek Him through His word. Life is filled
with too many complex circumstances to wonder through it aimlessly with out a guide and Gods word is
our guide in life in every circumstance. You may have heard the Bible referred to as Basic Instructions
Before Leaving Earth. Psalm 119:105 declares Gods word is a light unto our path. Our path is the
direction we take in life but the choice of is ours; the wide highway to destruction or the straight and
narrow path.
Upon becoming a Christian the believer's life began a process of being transformed to the likeness
of Christ. Through this process the believer lives a more holy life as time passes. The Holy Spirit
ministers to and directs the Christian life but Gods word is also a mandatory instrument of the
purification and sanctification process, guiding us to be a doer of the word. (Jn 1:23-25)(Jn 17:17). A
holy life is not as much a journey to perfection but rather the pursuit of liberation and freedom from
that which inhibits our walk of faith. God's word has the power to cleanse us (Ps 119:9).
Every believer has a duty to study Gods word. God's word gives wisdom, instruction and teaches
believers the ways of God. His discipline and correction gives us a positive direction in life (Pro 6:23). Do
not resist discipline, rather allow Gods word to direct and lead your way in life (Ps 119:133). God's word
is the only sure and absolute source of knowledge, wisdom and understanding for practical living. Life
principles are defined by the word of God. Diligent study of Gods word should be the believers
approach, being careful to avoid conforming scripture to our own ideology but rather conforming our
lives to the word of God. Paul instructs Timothy to continually study and read Gods word (1 Tim 4:13,
16). Memorizing Gods word gives aid to believers to help prevent from falling into sin (Ps 119:11).
Knowledge of Gods word also provides and equips Christians with the sword of the Spirit enabling
believers in spiritual warfare (Heb 4:12, Eph 6:17).
