| Overcoming Satan's Weapon of Guilt Romans 6 - died to sin To understand how this is accomplished we must first take a close look at Romans chapter six. Overcoming Satan's weapon of guilt is more of a realization of the truth of God's word rather than any action initiated on our part. These verses of scripture are profound, deep and yet simple. Most believers when they come to Christ realize they are forgiven of their past sins. Most often it is present, undealt with sin that torments the believer. There is a difference between the struggle of sin while facing conviction and giving your life over to sin, living "in" sin. If you can give your life completely over to sin without conviction then Christ is not in you. Paul never said that sin is dead to the Christian, only that it is impossible to live in sin. However, the old nature will battle to dominate the new. Past, present and future sins have been forgiven and paid for by Christ's work on the cross. Where sin increases, grace increases all the more. Therefore, if you are in Christ there is no condemnation because we are not under the law but under grace. This realization destroys Satan's weapon of guilt against the believer, therefore even his power of temptation is weakened (not eradicated). Once the believer realizes he is free of condemnation because of Christ's work on the cross and Satan's torment of guilt is broken, how then can sin have ruling power over you? (Ro 6:1-14). Sin is rendered powerless and we are freed from the bondage of sin and even the desire to sin is weakened as our body of sin dies. (Ro 6:6-7). This is true freedom in Christ. But Paul makes clear, just because grace increases where sin increases this is not liberty to live a carnal life of sin. As Christians we are identified with Christ as united to Him in His death (old nature dies) and His resurrection (to walk in new life). Christ died for all of our sin, therefore we are "joined to Him" and delivered from any power of sin to control us. Since we were baptized into His death and sin was rendered powerless, we died to sin. Our bodies are dead to sin because they will perish; they die just as our sin nature dies. Christ bought us with a price and the moment you received Christ, your body was pronounced dead and your glorified body now awaits you for the moment of Christ's return. The sin nature of the flesh dies as our new spiritual nature grows. This is a process and one must have the desire to be free from sin and be faithful in prayer and the study of scripture. As Christians we are obligated to put to death the deeds of the body. An effort is required on our part but this can only be accomplished through the power of the Spirit, not our own strength. We are not saved by works, only through Christ's atoning sacrifice are we saved, but we are required to put forth an effort and not to give ourselves over to sin. ( Ro 8:13 ) Christ's work on the cross also made the law of Moses invalid while also adopting the gentiles as heirs and sons. There is no Greek, Jew, Gentile or even Judea-Christian in Christ, only a new creation order (Gal 6:15). Since we were crucified with Christ our place in Adam and our place under the old creation of sin and death have been crucified and we now belong to the new creation order. The law also enslaved mankind under guilt, but now under the dispensation of grace the believer is endowed with liberty to live in accordance to the higher set principles of the resurrection life of Jesus. |
